About Charlotte
Teaching private and group Mat classes through East Devon, Charlotte has a real knack for using Joseph Pilates’ original sequence of mat work to build skills you need for every day life and for communicating in a very straight forward, engaging way. You will move, breathe deeply and gain strength and flexibility through consistency.
A previous career as a designer (with Pilates as her sanity) means she will spot every detail of your movement patterns and help you turn your attention to the one thing that will help everything else fall into place.
When not teaching, or doing Pilates, Charlotte can often be found with her nose in a book, researching movement, anatomy, breathing and bringing back these new thoughts to the team, and where relevant into class. When not being a total geek, she can also often be found happy and muddy in the garden or in the woods with a terrier in tow (or should that be the other way round?!)
“We are now physically and mentally fitter, stronger and can at last ski and snowboard again after nearly a decade.
It sounds dramatic, but Charlotte has changed our lives. We couldn’t be happier”
Class types:
Classical Mat Level 1...
… is for beginners with no movement limitations or injury who are new to Classical Pilates. We begin with the Basic or foundational repertoire in order to start to build your Power House. Ideally you will have been working in the studio on the apparatus, which will have made your transition to the Matwork more straightforward.
Classical Mat Level 2...
… you are working towards all the Intermediate repertoire from a solid foundational basis. You may need the odd reminder about how an exercise goes, but you're fine once you remember which is which. This will be a faster paced, flowing class and you will understand which exercises are suitable for your body and how to modify others appropriately for your current goals.
Classical Mat Level 3...
… the full Monty! Here we will work with the full 34 exercises of Joe Pilates’ original mat series, plus Advanced additions. You are as confident upside-down as you are the right way up, know the transitions from one exercise to the next and can move continuously and mindfully through a fast paced and super challenging workout. Your Roll Up, Rollover and Teaser now combine to become the Boomerang as we test our skills in every conceivable direction.
Strengthen & Restore Level B...
… is where we get creative around the basic Classical Mat to meet your individual needs. You know your regular workout well including some of your own particular modifications. We'll work through tailored floor, seated chair and standing exercises, making sure your your joints are always well supported.
Strengthen & Restore Level C...
… is a lightly modified class based firmly on sections of the Intermediate Classical Mat series. You are able to lie front, back and side, to kneel and to sit on the floor with reasonable ease. You may keep your head and chest supported on the floor for your Hundred and Abdominal Series of Five, but we will work strongly and with flow throughout the class. This level approaches a version of the traditional Mat series whilst observing the guidelines for those with reduced bone density or osteo-arthritis.
“[Charlotte] always makes the class fun and enjoyable, while supporting us to work hard. My posture, strength and stamina have greatly improved. Thanks Charlotte

“Pilates certainly does enrich my life!! I start the class feeling decrepit and sluggish and leave feeling younger, straighter and well stretched. Charlotte has a delightful way of getting the last millimetre of effort from her clients.”
