About Katharine

Full of enthusiastic nerdery, Katharine’s workouts are as fun as they are challenging. Methodically layering your new skills, she’ll encourage you further than you think you’re capable of going, with a smile and a laugh (and quite possibly a pertinent quote… could be Mr Pilates but might be Yoda).

Classically-trained as a dancer, performing across the UK and Europe, she’s firmly rooted in the fields of both movement and education. Katharine earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Dance and Movement Studies, with further training in Teaching Adult Learners. She was first certified to teach Pilates in 2006. After teaching in Dance departments at degree and postgraduate level, including 8 years at Trinity Laban (Europe’s largest conservatoire for music and dance), where she also taught in the in-house Pilates Studio, she moved with her family to Devon in 2012, establishing her first studio near Honiton.

Twenty years since first qualifying, Katharine completed a further intensive “post-grad” qualification with her mentor Shari Berkowitz of The Vertical Workshop (TVW): an evidence-based approach to Classical Pilates, imbued with critical thinking and Shari’s distinctive teaching methodology.

An extremely muddy Katharine wading through a knee-deep bog and roaring like a bear at the camera during the Grizzly trail running race

Katharine’s own Pilates practice supports all sorts of muddy activities. For her that ranges from a new found love of trail running (quite a departure from the ballet-barre), to hefting around buckets of goodness-knows-what on her family’s smallholding. She’ll deny it, but Katharine has a rather competitive spirit... don’t ever challenge her to a game of Twister!

Katharine combines a light touch and sense of humour with insistence on getting it right.

Katharine is encouraging a student to reach her spine along the Reformer, whilst offering a hands-on cue. A male client does the same exercise alongside.

A great energetic workout using a mix of apparatus. Remains very focused on the individual’s practice whilst everyone’s working at their own level. I love it!

Teaching Qualifications and Development

Since initially training to teach the Pilates Method, Katharine has 20 years of Pilates teaching experience and continuing education:

  • 2006 Pilates Matwork Teacher Training Programme, Pilates Foundation UK (450 hours)

  • 2009 Full Apparatus Teacher Training Bridge, Pilates Foundation UK (650 hours)

  • Katharine has particularly sought out trainers with a Classical focus to further her own teaching journey. In the 10 years after her first lecture/workshop with Shari Berkowitz in 2014, Katharine completed The Vertical Workshop Pilates Teacher Intensives and a great many continuing education seminars before embarking on the full TVW certification.

  • 2025 The Vertical Workshop (TVW) Pilates Teacher Training Bridge, mentored by Shari Berkowitz (12 months)
