Mat or Apparatus?

The power of Pilates lies in its method - a comprehensive system of exercises, using each piece of apparatus (of which the mat is one) for its unique benefits. We build each client a programme for strength, stretch and control, progressively layering exercises to address their goals, and to create a full-bodied workout.

The mat is often our first encounter with the method of Pilates and you'll hear the mat series described as both the basis and the pinnacle of the system - hmm, how does that work?!

In the apparatus studio, we'll often start a first-timer with beginner versions of the first few exercises of the mat series. The foundations of every exercise in your Pilates future are right there, your ABC of Pilates...

... but then, the rest of the mat series is HARD! Ideally, we're going to build on those ABCs by working with the sprung apparatus - including the Reformer, the Cadillac and the various chairs until you can mix up those basic skills into more complex actions with just you and gravity on the mat.

Spring resistance is a defining feature of many pieces of Pilates apparatus. Engaging with a spring develops our strength, stretch and control as we load the spring and importantly we control its recoil too.

Surprisingly for many, an appropriately strong spring with lots of apparatus support is "easier" as it guides us to find muscular control. However a strong spring with little support from the apparatus is really challenging as we have to find our own internal support - Standing Arm Springs and Ped-O-Pull, we're looking at you! Then take that spring away completely and voila, the mat!

Understanding how the springs relate to progressing through the whole system is just one of the many reasons that we teachers have worked through such rigorous training. When you join us for a workout, we're looking at the big picture of how to guide you towards your physical goals, using the right tool for the job as you progress.

So mat or apparatus? In an ideal world, BOTH! They're intrinsically linked. We believe that in order to get the most out of the Pilates method, the mat series is just one of several pieces of the puzzle.

The mat series on its own is wonderful. It’s easy to access in a location near you, doesn’t require any particular kit and we can even teach you at home via Zoom if you’re not able to get to the studio. Remember lockdown days when we only had our mats? That really reminded us of the power of that series!

But mat + springs = where the greatest change happens.
